Polymeriseokset, often translated as polymer blends or polymer alloys, are materials made by physically mixing two or more polymers. The goal of creating a polymer blend is to combine the desirable properties of the individual polymers to achieve a new material with enhanced characteristics. For example, mixing a rigid polymer with a flexible one might yield a material with improved toughness and impact resistance. The properties of the blend are not simply an average of the parent polymers; they depend heavily on the miscibility of the polymers.

If the polymers are miscible, they will form a homogeneous solution at the molecular level, leading to a single-phase blend. In this case, the properties often show simple additivity or predictable deviations. However, most polymer pairs are immiscible, forming a two-phase system where distinct polymer domains are dispersed within one another. The morphology of these blends, meaning the size, shape, and distribution of the dispersed phases, plays a critical role in determining the blend's mechanical, thermal, and optical properties. Surface tension between the polymers, viscosity, and processing conditions during blending significantly influence the resulting morphology.

Additives such as compatibilizers are often employed to improve the adhesion and interfacial strength between immiscible polymers, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of the blend. Compatibilizers typically have segments that are chemically similar to both polymers, acting as a bridge between the two phases. Common examples of polymer blends include acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), a blend of acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene, and polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC/ABS), which combines the impact strength of PC with the processability of ABS. The development of polymer blends is a significant area in polymer science and engineering, offering a cost-effective way to tailor material properties for a wide range of applications.
