Polymeerirakenteet, or polymer structures, refer to the arrangement and organization of polymer molecules. Polymers are large molecules composed of repeating subunits called monomers. The way these monomers link together and how the resulting polymer chains arrange themselves in space significantly influence the material's properties. These structures can range from simple linear chains to highly branched or cross-linked networks.

Linear polymers are characterized by long, unbranched chains. They can pack relatively closely, leading to crystalline or semi-crystalline regions within the material. This close packing often results in higher tensile strength and melting points. Branched polymers have side chains attached to the main polymer backbone. The degree and type of branching affect how the polymer chains can interact, often leading to lower density and viscosity compared to linear polymers of similar molecular weight.

Cross-linked polymers are formed when polymer chains are chemically bonded to each other, creating a three-dimensional network. This extensive cross-linking severely restricts chain movement, making the material rigid, strong, and often insoluble. Elastomers, like rubber, have a lightly cross-linked structure that allows for significant deformation and recovery. Thermosetting plastics are examples of highly cross-linked polymers that, once formed, cannot be melted or reshaped.

The specific arrangement of polymer chains, including their orientation and the presence of amorphous or crystalline domains, is referred to as morphology. Polymer morphology is a critical factor in determining mechanical properties such as stiffness, toughness, and elongation, as well as thermal and optical characteristics. Understanding and controlling these structures is fundamental to designing polymers for specific applications.
