Polyesterihartsi, often shortened to polyester resin, is a synthetic resin derived from the esterification of dibasic acids with diols. These resins are thermosetting polymers, meaning they undergo an irreversible chemical change when cured, typically by the addition of a catalyst. This curing process transforms the liquid resin into a hard, solid plastic.

Polyester resins are widely used in the manufacturing of a broad range of products due to their versatility, cost-effectiveness, and good mechanical properties. They are commonly found in fiberglass reinforced plastics, where the resin acts as a binder for glass fibers, creating strong and lightweight composite materials. The properties of polyester resin can be modified by varying the types of acids and alcohols used in its synthesis, as well as by adding various fillers and additives. Common types include unsaturated polyester resins, which are capable of cross-linking, and saturated polyester resins, which are more flexible and are often used in coatings and adhesives. The curing process is usually exothermic, and proper ventilation and personal protective equipment are recommended when working with these materials.
