There are two main types of polio vaccines: inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) and oral polio vaccine (OPV). IPV is administered via injection and is effective in preventing both wild and vaccine-derived polioviruses. OPV, on the other hand, is taken orally and is highly effective in preventing wild poliovirus infection but can potentially cause vaccine-derived polioviruses, which are less virulent but can still cause paralysis.

The development of polio vaccines has been a significant milestone in public health, contributing to the near-eradication of wild poliovirus. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, launched in 1988, has seen remarkable progress, with the number of polio cases decreasing from an estimated 350,000 in 1988 to just 125 cases in 2021. This success is largely attributed to widespread vaccination campaigns and the use of polio vaccines. However, the disease remains a threat in certain regions, particularly in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where ongoing efforts are focused on maintaining high vaccination coverage to prevent outbreaks.

Polio vaccines are typically administered in a series of doses to ensure optimal protection. For children, the recommended schedule includes three doses of IPV and two doses of OPV, with the final dose of OPV often given concurrently with the third dose of IPV. For adults, a single dose of IPV is usually sufficient. Routine vaccination is a key component of polio eradication efforts, and it is crucial for maintaining herd immunity to protect vulnerable populations, such as infants and individuals with weakened immune systems.

While polio vaccines are generally safe and effective, they can cause mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site, fever, and fatigue. Serious adverse reactions are rare but can include allergic reactions and, in the case of OPV, rare instances of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis. Continuous monitoring and research are essential to ensure the safety and efficacy of polio vaccines and to address any emerging challenges in their administration.
