Polikliniken

Polikliniken, or polyclinics, are healthcare facilities that provide outpatient medical services across multiple specialties. They offer consultations with various specialists, diagnostic testing (such as laboratory work and imaging), preventive care, and often minor procedures, all without routine admission to a hospital. Polikliniken are commonly integrated into a hospital system or operated as independent outpatient centers, with the aim of delivering coordinated, multidisciplinary care in a single location.

In the organization of care, polikliniken emphasize accessibility and efficiency. They typically operate by appointment but may also accept walk-ins for certain services. Patients can receive multiple evaluations in one visit, receive referrals to other specialists within the same center, and obtain follow-up care or monitoring for chronic conditions. Services usually include general medical consultations, pediatrics, women's health, orthopedics, diagnostics, and preventive programs, along with short in-clinic procedures.

The term is used in German-speaking countries and in several Central and Eastern European languages (for example poliklinika or poliklinik). Historically, polyclinics emerged as outpatient extensions of teaching hospitals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to improve access to specialist care and reduce inpatient demand. In modern health systems, the concept persists in various forms, though many regions now refer to similar facilities as outpatient clinics, ambulatory centers, or hospital outpatient departments.
