Poldra

Poldra is a town and municipality in the northern Varandia region. It serves as the administrative center of the municipality of Poldra and lies along the Poldra River, about 60 kilometers from Varandia City. The municipality covers around 42 square kilometers and has an estimated population of 11,500 as of 2022. The local government operates under a mayor-council system.

Geography and climate: The terrain is gently rolling with vineyards and olive groves. The climate is temperate with dry summers and wet winters; average annual precipitation is around 700 millimeters.

History: The area was settled in the Middle Ages, with the first documentary reference dating to around 1190. It grew as a market town serving surrounding farms. In the 18th century it developed crafts, including pottery and textile weaving. The arrival of the railway in the late 19th century spurred growth, and the town expanded in the 20th century through small-scale industry and service sectors.

Economy: The economy centers on agriculture (primarily vineyards and olives), food processing, and light manufacturing. Tourism and artisanal crafts are increasingly important, supported by the historic core and the surrounding countryside.

Culture and landmarks: Poldra's historic center contains the 15th-century St. Michael's Church, the restored town hall, and a fortress ruin overlooking the town. An annual harvest festival showcases regional produce and traditional music. Local cuisine features grape-based drinks and dishes cooked with olive oil.

Administration and transport: Poldra has a mayor and a 12-member town council. The town is connected by a regional railway line and a national road, with bus services linking nearby communities. Twin-town relations exist with several neighboring towns.
