Pneumokokkinfektsiooni, commonly known as pneumococcal infection, is a type of bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, a bacterium that can infect the lungs, bloodstream, and other parts of the body. It is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in children under five years old and the elderly.

Pneumococcal infections can manifest in various forms, including pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, and sinusitis. Pneumonia is the most common manifestation, characterized by inflammation of the lung tissue, often caused by the bacterium entering the lungs through the respiratory tract. Meningitis, an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Sepsis, a severe bloodstream infection, can lead to organ failure and death if left untreated.

Antibiotics are the primary treatment for pneumococcal infections, with the choice of antibiotic depending on the severity of the infection and the patient's response to treatment.
