Plåtrustningen

Plåtrustningen refers to a historical building technique primarily used in Scandinavia, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It involved the use of pre-fabricated sheet metal, often corrugated or embossed, to cover the exterior of buildings. This material served as a protective and decorative layer, offering an alternative to traditional wood or stone cladding.

The primary purpose of plåtrustningen was to shield the underlying wooden structure from the elements, thereby increasing its longevity and reducing maintenance. The metal sheeting was typically galvanized iron or steel, chosen for its durability and relative affordability. It was often painted in various colors to achieve a desired aesthetic, mimicking the appearance of more expensive materials like brick or stone, or simply providing a bright, uniform finish.

This method was particularly popular for agricultural buildings, industrial structures, and even some residential homes in rural areas. Its ease of installation and resistance to fire were also seen as advantages. However, over time, the technique has largely fallen out of favor due to concerns about its durability, potential for rust, and aesthetic limitations compared to modern cladding materials.
