Plåstret

Plåstret is the Swedish term for an adhesive bandage used to cover minor wounds or skin irritations. A typical plåster consists of a flexible backing with an adhesive border and a non-adherent absorbent pad that lies directly over the wound, protecting it from dirt and bacteria while allowing some moisture release.

Plåster come in a variety of materials and designs. Common backings include cloth, plastic, or polyurethane films. The adhesive layer is often latex-based, though many products are latex-free to reduce allergy risk. Some plåster are waterproof or breathable, and others are transparent to monitor the wound. Pads may be plain, non-adherent, or infused with antiseptics, antibiotics, or hydrocolloid compounds for certain wound care needs.

Usage and application: Clean and dry the area around the wound, place the pad over the wound, and press the edges to seal. Remove and replace the plåster if it becomes wet, dirty, or after a day or when the pad has become soiled. Do not use on deep lacerations, burns, or broken skin that bleeds excessively; seek medical advice if in doubt.

History and context: Adhesive bandages were developed in the early 20th century and have since become a common element of first aid kits worldwide. In Sweden, as in many countries, plåster are widely available in pharmacies, supermarkets, and healthcare settings, reflecting a standard approach to minor wound care and skin protection.
