Pläteringar, also known as electroplating or metal plating, is a surface finishing process that involves depositing a thin layer of metal onto a substrate using electrolysis. This technique is widely used across various industries to enhance the properties of materials, such as improving corrosion resistance, increasing hardness, enhancing electrical conductivity, or for decorative purposes. The substrate is typically immersed in an electrolyte solution containing ions of the plating metal. When an electric current is passed through the solution, the metal ions are attracted to the negatively charged substrate (cathode) and deposit as a solid layer.

The choice of plating metal depends on the desired outcome. Common plating metals include gold, silver, chromium, nickel, copper, and zinc. For instance, gold plating is often used for decorative jewelry and electronic components due to its conductivity and resistance to tarnishing. Chromium plating is frequently applied to automotive parts and bathroom fixtures for its hardness, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Zinc plating is a cost-effective method for protecting steel from rust.

The electroplating process requires careful control of several parameters, including the electrolyte composition, current density, temperature, and plating time, to achieve a uniform and adherent coating. Impurities in the electrolyte or improper process control can lead to defects such as porosity, uneven thickness, or poor adhesion. While beneficial, electroplating processes can also generate wastewater containing metal ions and chemicals, necessitating proper waste treatment to mitigate environmental impact.
