Pleksiklaas

Pleksiklaas, also known by its chemical name polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and various trade names such as Lucite and Perspex, is a transparent thermoplastic. It is a synthetic polymer derived from acrylic acid. Pleksiklaas is known for its clarity, often exceeding that of glass, and its significantly lower weight and higher impact resistance. It is also more resistant to shattering than glass.

The production of Pleksiklaas typically involves the polymerization of methyl methacrylate monomer. This process can be carried out through bulk polymerization, suspension polymerization, or emulsion polymerization, with bulk polymerization often favored for producing clear sheets. The resulting polymer can be molded into various shapes, extruded into sheets or films, or cast.

Due to its properties, Pleksiklaas finds widespread use in numerous applications. It is commonly used as a shatter-resistant alternative to glass in windows, aquariums, and protective screens. It is also employed in signage, lighting fixtures, automotive taillights, medical devices, furniture, and even in the aerospace industry for canopies. Its versatility allows for easy fabrication, cutting, and shaping, making it a popular choice for designers and manufacturers. While it can scratch more readily than glass, its repairability and lighter weight often make it a preferred material.
