In soccer, playmakers are usually creative midfielders who link defense and attack. They tend to operate in central zones, fashion through passes and assists, and dictate tempo. The archetype is often referred to as the "number 10." Modern tactics can spread playmakers into wider or deeper roles, but the core function remains to create chances and set up goals.
