Midfielders are players whose primary zone is the middle third of the pitch. They link the defense and the attack, shaping possession and tempo. Modern midfielders vary by specialization: defensive midfielders protect the back line and disrupt opposition play; central midfielders drive transitions and maintain balance; attacking midfielders create chances and often contribute goals; wide midfielders provide width and supply crosses from the flanks.

Core duties include distributing passes, progressing the ball through lines, and maintaining team shape. They are expected to press when out of possession, track runners, and help recover the ball. Key attributes include stamina, passing range and accuracy, vision, ball control, dribbling, shooting, and tackling. Successful midfield play often relies on spatial awareness and decision-making under pressure.

Tactical roles depend on formation and coaching philosophy. In a 4-3-3, three central midfielders coordinate to control tempo, with roles that may be more defensive, box-to-box, or advanced. In a 4-2-3-1, holding players shield the back line while more attack-minded teammates look to unlock defenses. Wide midfielders provide width, stretch play, and can switch to inner positions as required by the system.

Development and evaluation focus on technique, tactical understanding, and physical conditioning. Common measures include pass completion, chances created, assists, goals, distance covered, and pressing indices. Midfielders are often expected to contribute both defensively and offensively, adapting to opponents and match situations.
