Platyceps

Platyceps is a genus of Old World racers, commonly known as whip snakes, found in the Mediterranean region and parts of North Africa. These are medium-sized, slender snakes characterized by their flattened heads and often their ability to move quickly. The genus was previously considered part of the larger genus Coluber, but has since been reclassified based on genetic and morphological studies.

Species within Platyceps are typically diurnal and prey on a variety of small vertebrates, including lizards, small mammals, and occasionally birds. They are non-venomous and kill their prey by constriction. Their coloration can vary significantly between species and even individuals, often providing camouflage within their respective habitats, which range from arid scrublands and rocky areas to more vegetated environments.

Reproduction in Platyceps is oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. The number of eggs laid and the incubation period can vary depending on the species and environmental conditions. Young snakes are independent upon hatching and face a high mortality rate. Despite their widespread distribution across several countries, many Platyceps species are not extensively studied, and their conservation status varies, with some facing threats from habitat loss and fragmentation.
