Platformfüggetlen, or platform-independent, describes software that can run on multiple operating systems or computing environments without modification. It is used to characterize applications, data formats, and deployment methods designed to avoid OS-specific code, binaries, or system calls.

Achieving platform independence often relies on several approaches. Cross-platform languages and runtimes, such as Java, Go, and Python, aim to hide underlying OS details from the developer. Platform-neutral bytecode executed by a virtual machine or runtime (for example the Java Virtual Machine or the .NET Common Language Runtime) provides a layer of abstraction. Interpreted or sandboxed environments, browser-based web apps, and containerization technologies (like Docker) further enhance portability by packaging runtimes and dependencies together. Abstraction layers that encapsulate OS-specific functionality behind uniform APIs, as well as cross-platform user interface toolkits (Qt, Electron, Flutter), also contribute to platform independence. Web technologies are often leveraged to deliver platform-agnostic experiences since the browser provides a common runtime.

Examples and use cases include Java’s long-standing “write once, run anywhere” paradigm, the cross-platform reach of .NET Core and subsequent .NET releases, WebAssembly in the browser, and container-based deployments that isolate software from host differences. Platform independence is particularly valuable for reducing vendor lock-in, widening the potential user base, and simplifying maintenance across diverse environments.

Limitations exist: not all features or optimizations are available on every platform, and performance overhead or API gaps can occur. Native integrations, hardware-specific capabilities, or locale-dependent behavior may still require platform-specific adjustments. In practice, platform independence is a spectrum, balancing portability with performance and access to native capabilities.
