Platelet-derived refers to substances or effects that originate from platelets, the small, anucleate cells in blood that are central to hemostasis and wound healing. Platelets contain granules packed with bioactive molecules that are released upon activation.

Among the best characterized platelet-derived signals are growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and insulin-like growth factors (IGFs). Together with cytokines and chemokines, these platelet-derived factors influence cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, and extracellular matrix production, contributing to tissue repair and regeneration.

Platelet-derived extracellular vesicles, including microparticles released from activated platelets, carry proteins, lipids, and sometimes RNA. They participate in coagulation, inflammation, and intercellular communication, and are studied as disease biomarkers and potential therapeutic vectors.

Practical applications of platelet-derived products include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) preparations, which concentrate platelets and their growth factors for autologous use in medicine. PRP and related platelet-derived therapies are used in disciplines such as orthopedics, dermatology, and dentistry, with mixed and evolving evidence regarding efficacy and optimal preparation methods.
