Plastfragmendid is a term used in environmental and materials research to describe plastic fragments that arise through fragmentation of larger plastic items and are defined by a specific set of experimental or modelling criteria. The concept provides a standardized reference for studying how polymers break down, disperse, and interact with ecosystems.

Typically produced in controlled experiments by mechanical abrasion, shredding, or simulated weathering, plastfragmendid are characterized by size ranges on the order of tens of micrometers to a few millimeters, known polymer identity, and documented surface properties. Researchers select criteria such as shape, surface area, and polymer type to facilitate cross-study comparisons.

Characterization and detection rely on spectroscopy and imaging techniques. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy identify polymer composition, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals morphology. Quantification often involves optical or electronic microscopy, hyperspectral imaging, or mass-based methods following separation from environmental samples.

Applications include calibrating fragmentation models, informing environmental fate simulations, and supporting ecotoxicological assessments by providing well-defined comparators for fragment-based exposures. Limitations include variation in fragment generation methods, potential bias toward certain polymers, and the risk that plastfragmendid definitions diverge between research communities.

Plastfragmendid is not widely standardized and remains a specialized term within a subset of the literature. As such, its use is most informative when complemented by conventional descriptors of microplastics, including size, polymer type, and surface chemistry.
