Plasmonovoltaiska

Plasmonovoltaiska refers to a type of photovoltaic device that utilizes plasmonic effects to enhance light absorption and charge separation. In these devices, metallic nanoparticles, often made of gold or silver, are embedded within or on the surface of the semiconductor material. When light strikes these nanoparticles, it excites collective oscillations of their free electrons, known as surface plasmons. These plasmonic resonances can lead to several beneficial effects for solar energy conversion.

One primary mechanism is enhanced light scattering. The plasmonic nanoparticles can scatter incident light into the semiconductor layer, increasing the optical path length and thus the probability of photon absorption. This is particularly useful for materials that have a relatively narrow absorption spectrum or are thin to reduce material costs. Another key effect is plasmon-enhanced electric fields. The oscillating electrons in the nanoparticles generate strong electromagnetic fields in their vicinity. These localized fields can increase the generation rate of electron-hole pairs within the semiconductor material, even in regions far from the nanoparticle surface.

Furthermore, plasmonic nanoparticles can facilitate charge separation. In some configurations, the hot electrons generated through plasmon decay can be directly injected into the semiconductor's conduction band, contributing to the photocurrent. This bypasses some of the energy losses associated with traditional charge separation mechanisms. Plasmonovoltaiska technology holds promise for improving the efficiency of solar cells, especially those made from thin-film semiconductors, and offers a pathway to explore novel photovoltaic architectures. Research in this area focuses on optimizing nanoparticle size, shape, distribution, and material choices to maximize these plasmonic benefits.
