Plantwater

Plantwater is not a standardized term in science; it is used informally to refer to water that is used for plants or, in some contexts, to brands or products marketed for plant care. Because the term lacks a single definition, its meaning is determined by context.

In horticulture, plantwater commonly means irrigation water. The suitability of water for plants depends on quality factors such as mineral content, salinity, pH, and chemical contaminants. Freshwater sources like tap water and rainwater are often preferred, while highly saline water or water with excess chloride can impair sensitive species. Watering practices balance adequate moisture with drainage to avoid root rot.

Rainwater harvesting and graywater recycling are two approaches to expanding plantwater sources. Rainwater is typically free of many dissolved minerals present in groundwater but may contain pollutants; graywater may be reused where local regulations permit and where it is low in soaps and chemicals that harm plants.
