Plantejar

Plantejar is a verb used in Catalan and, in closely related forms, in other Romance languages to mean raise, propose, or present something for consideration. In Catalan, it is commonly employed to introduce a problem, question, proposal, or plan, and it can also refer to outlining goals or strategies. The reflexive form plantejar-se means to consider or intend to do something, or to ask oneself a question.

In practical use, plantejar appears in both formal and informal contexts. Examples include: Cal plantejar aquest tema a la reunió (We need to raise this topic at the meeting); Aquest informe planteja tres alternatives (This report presents three alternatives); Em plantejo estudiar més (I am considering studying more). The verb often appears with direct objects such as un problema, una qüestió, un pla, or objectius.

Reflexive nuances: plantejar-se can express inner consideration or resolve, as in Em plantejo si val la pena, or S’ha plantejat reduir emissions (There are plans or considerations to reduce emissions). The term is usually conjugated as a regular -ar verb in Catalan.

Cross-linguistic notes: In Spanish, the cognate plantear carries similar senses of posing, proposing, or raising a question or issue. In Portuguese, the related verb plantear or planejar covers similar ideas depending on the nuance, with planejar more common for outlining plans and plantear used for raising issues or questions. While spelling and exact usage vary by language, the core idea of presenting something for consideration is shared across these Romance languages.
