Plantagen

Plantagen is most commonly encountered as a reference to the Plantagenet dynasty, a medieval royal house that ruled England from the mid-12th to the late 15th century. The name derives from the Old French plantagenet, meaning "sprig of genista (broom)," a symbol allegedly worn by Geoffrey of Anjou, and later applied to his descendants.

The Plantagenets originated with Henry II, who, through marriage and inheritance, established the Angevin Empire and helped consolidate royal authority. The dynasty oversaw the development of England's legal and administrative systems and the growth of Parliament. Notable monarchs include Henry II, Richard I, John, Henry III, and Edward I–III, whose reigns left a lasting imprint on governance, justice, and the realm's military and fiscal structures.

In the later Middle Ages, the dynasty faced internal strife and external pressures. The Wars of the Roses (c. 1455–1487) pitted the houses of Lancaster and York against each other, weakening royal authority and culminating in the defeat of Richard III at Bosworth Field in 1485. The death of Richard III ended Plantagenet rule, and Henry VII founded the Tudor dynasty, uniting rival claims through marriage to Elizabeth of York.

Legacy of the Plantagenets includes significant developments in law, governance, and national identity, as well as a rich body of literary and historical scholarship. The name remains central in medieval history, used to describe the various branches and cadet lines that followed within the broader Plantagenet lineage.
