Plaketter

Plaketter are small awards in the form of medals or insignia that are given to individuals to recognise achievements, service, or commemorations. In Swedish usage, the term plakett (plural plaketter) covers a range of objects that function as formal recognitions, including medals worn on clothing as well as decorative plaques displayed at offices or home. Plaketter differ from larger orders or decorations in their scale and typical usage, though the lines between categories can be fluid.

Origins and use: Plaketter have appeared in various forms across Europe for centuries. They are issued by sovereign states, municipalities, professional associations, educational institutions, foundations, and corporations. They may honour merit in fields such as military service, public administration, science, arts, sports, or cultural work, and are commonly presented during ceremonies or anniversaries.

Design and production: Plaquettes are usually metal, sometimes with enamel or inlays. Common materials include silver, bronze, or gold, with inscriptions naming the issuer, recipient, and reason for the award; dates may be included.
