Plaatproductie is a Dutch term used to describe the production of plates or discs used in different industrial contexts. The meaning varies by sector, with two main applications being vinyl records and printing plates for offset printing.

In vinyl record production, the process starts with mastering to create a lacquer master. A cutting engineer inscribes the groove pattern onto a lacquer disc. The lacquer is then electroformed to produce a metal stamper (usually nickel), which serves as the negative for pressing. The stamper is mounted in a hydraulic press and pressed with heated vinyl pellets to form discs. After pressing, records are cooled, trimmed, and subjected to quality checks for groove fidelity, weight, and surface cleanliness before packaging and distribution. Environmental considerations include material recycling and waste handling.

In offset printing, plate production involves imaging a plate with the desired image. Modern workflows use computer-to-plate (CTP) systems to image aluminum or polymer plates, often using thermal or violet imaging. The exposed plate is developed, rinsed, dried, and then mounted on the printing press. The plate’s image areas accept ink while non-image areas repel ink, enabling printing. Quality criteria cover image sharpness, plate durability, and accurate registration. Sustainability concerns focus on chemical use, wastewater treatment, and recycling of plates and packaging.

The term plaatproductie may also appear in contexts like printed circuit boards, though this usage is less common. Overall, plaatproductie reflects the production of specialized surfaces for sound, print, or electronic applications.
