Pitoisuusero

Pitoisuusero, in Finnish, refers to the difference in solute concentration between two regions or compartments. In science it is a fundamental measure used to describe what motivates the movement of substances across interfaces, and it is closely related to the concept of a concentration gradient. While the exact phrase is Finnish, in English contexts it is commonly described as a concentration difference or concentration gradient.

In diffusion, substances tend to move from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration, driven by the pitoisuusero. The rate of diffusion generally increases with a larger concentration difference, higher temperature, greater membrane permeability, and longer time. In osmosis, water moves across a semipermeable membrane toward the side with the higher solute concentration, reducing the pitoisuusero until balance is approached; the osmotic pressure depends on the magnitude of this concentration difference.

When charged solutes are involved, movement is governed by both the concentration difference and the electrical potential difference, a concept captured by electrochemical potential. In biology, cells actively maintain concentration differences for ions (for example, sodium and potassium) using transport proteins and pumps such as the Na+/K+ ATPase, creating gradients essential for processes like nerve impulses and muscle contraction.

Measurement and units commonly use molarity (moles per liter) or other concentration metrics, though non-ideal solutions and the presence of multiple solutes can modify the effective driving force.
