Pitkäsiimoja

Pitkäsiimoja, also known as longline fishing, is a method of commercial fishing where a long line of baited hooks is deployed from a boat and allowed to drift in the water for an extended period. The term "pitkäsiimoja" is Finnish for longline fishing. This technique is commonly used for targeting large pelagic species such as tuna, swordfish, and marlin. The longline consists of a series of hooks attached to a mainline, which is anchored to the seafloor and kept afloat by floats at the surface. The line can be several kilometers long and can drift for several days or even weeks, depending on the species being targeted and the fishing conditions.

Longline fishing is known for its high catch rates and the ability to target large, high-value species. However, it also has significant environmental impacts, including bycatch of non-target species and habitat disturbance. To mitigate these impacts, many longline fisheries operate under strict regulations and management plans.
