Piksekaitses

Piksekaitses, often translated as lightning protection, refers to a system of measures designed to protect buildings and structures from damage caused by lightning strikes. These systems are crucial for preventing fires, structural damage, and potential harm to occupants.

A typical lightning protection system consists of three main components: the air terminal system, the down conductor system, and the grounding system. The air terminal system, commonly known as lightning rods, are pointed metal rods strategically placed on the highest points of a structure. Their purpose is to intercept a lightning strike, directing it away from the building itself.

Once intercepted, the electrical charge of the lightning is safely channeled to the ground through the down conductor system. These are usually copper or aluminum cables that run from the air terminals down the exterior of the building. They must be installed in a direct and unimpeded path to the grounding system.

The grounding system is the final and essential part of the piksekaitses. It comprises one or more ground electrodes buried in the earth. These electrodes dissipate the electrical energy from the lightning strike safely into the ground, preventing it from accumulating within the structure and causing damage.

Properly designed and installed piksekaitses systems significantly reduce the risk of lightning-related incidents. Regular inspection and maintenance are recommended to ensure the system remains effective and undamaged. The effectiveness of a lightning protection system is governed by various national and international standards.
