Piedirosso

Piedirosso is a red grape variety primarily grown in the Campania region of Southern Italy. Its name, literally translating to "red foot," refers to the reddish color of the grape's stem. It is one of the most important indigenous grapes of Campania and is a key component in many of the region's prestigious red wines.

The grape is known for producing wines with a deep ruby color, medium to full body, and moderate tannins. Aromas and flavors commonly associated with Piedirosso include cherry, plum, and sometimes earthy or spicy notes. It ripens relatively late in the season.

Piedirosso is a significant component of several Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) wines, most notably in the Campi Flegrei and Aglianico del Taburno appellations. While often blended with other local varieties such as Aglianico, it can also be found as a single varietal wine, offering a distinct expression of Campania's terroir. Viticultural practices and winemaking techniques can influence the final style of Piedirosso wine, ranging from fruit-forward and approachable to more complex and age-worthy.
