Photodiodelike

Photodiodelike describes devices or materials that exhibit photodetection behavior akin to a photodiode. Such elements convert light into an electrical signal and typically generate a photocurrent under reverse bias or in zero-bias photovoltaic operation. The term is often used for nontraditional or emerging materials and structures that do not fit the archetype of a conventional silicon photodiode but show diode-like current–voltage characteristics when illuminated.

Operating principle: Absorbed photons create electron–hole pairs that are separated by built-in electric fields at junctions or internal barriers, producing a current proportional to light intensity. Many photodiodelikes use p–n junctions, Schottky contacts, or quantum wells and may rely on photogating or trapping for their response.

Materials and structures: Photodiodelike devices include organic and inorganic semiconductors, perovskites, and two-dimensional materials such as MoS2 or black phosphorus, as well as quantum-dot and hybrid devices. Some designs are optimized for self-powered operation, while others require modest reverse bias to improve speed or linearity.

Performance considerations: Performance is described by responsivity, spectral range, response time, dark current, noise, and linearity. Photodiodelikes can offer advantages in flexible form factors, low-cost fabrication, or tailored spectral responses, but challenges remain in stability, reproducibility, and achieving low noise at room temperature.

Applications and status: Applications span imaging sensors, optical communication receivers, environmental sensing, and biomedical photodetection. In research, photodiodelike devices are evaluated for integration with CMOS readouts and for niches where traditional silicon photodiodes are less suitable.
