Phenotypes

A phenotype is the set of observable characteristics of an organism, including its morphology, development, physiology, and behavior. It results from the interaction of the organism’s genotype with its environment and can be influenced by epigenetic factors. The phenotype encompasses outward traits such as height or leaf shape as well as internal biochemical states and cellular characteristics, such as protein expression levels or metabolic profiles.

The genotype is the genetic makeup that provides the potential for traits, while the phenotype is the realized expression of those traits. The mapping from genotype to phenotype is shaped by gene regulation, regulatory networks, and environmental inputs. Some traits show complete penetrance, meaning the genotype reliably produces a particular phenotype, whereas others exhibit variable expressivity. Mutations can alter phenotypes, and non-genetic factors such as nutrition, temperature, or stress can modify phenotypic outcomes.

Phenotyping is the process of measuring phenotypes. It spans organismal traits and molecular phenotypes, including gene expression, proteins, and metabolites. In research, high-throughput phenotyping and imaging are used to link genetic variation with phenotypic variation. Examples include coat color in animals, leaf area in plants, blood pressure, and cognitive performance.

Phenotypic plasticity refers to changes in phenotype in response to environmental conditions without genetic changes. Plasticity can be adaptive, increasing an organism’s fitness in a given environment, though not all traits are equally plastic.

Phenotypes are central to biology and medicine. They are used to classify organisms, diagnose diseases, and study evolution. Applications span agriculture, ecology, and clinical research, where understanding phenotypes helps connect genetic information to observable traits and bodily functions.
