Phenotypeled refers to a method of biological research or intervention where observations or manipulations of an organism's observable traits, known as its phenotype, guide subsequent steps. This approach contrasts with methods that solely focus on underlying genetic sequences or molecular mechanisms. In essence, phenotypeled research begins with what can be seen or measured directly – such as a plant's growth rate, an animal's behavior, or a cell's morphology – and uses these observations to infer or investigate the genetic or environmental factors responsible.

This methodology is particularly useful in areas where the direct genetic cause is unknown or complex. For instance, in drug discovery, researchers might identify a compound that alters a specific cellular phenotype, and then work backward to understand the molecular pathways affected by the drug. Similarly, in agriculture, a plant breeder might select individuals exhibiting desirable traits, like drought resistance, and then crossbreed them, using the phenotypic expression as the primary selection criterion.
