In simpler terms, it indicates how contagious a disease is.

If R0 is greater than 1, an infected person will, on average, infect more than one other person. This leads to an increase in the number of cases over time, potentially resulting in an epidemic. Conversely, if R0 is less than 1, each infected individual infects, on average, fewer than one other person. In this scenario, the infection will likely die out on its own, and an epidemic will not occur. When R0 is exactly equal to 1, the number of infections remains stable, and the disease becomes endemic.

The value of R0 is not a fixed property of a disease but rather depends on various factors. These include the inherent infectivity of the pathogen, the mode of transmission (e.g., airborne, direct contact), the duration of infectivity for an infected individual, and the susceptibility of the population, which is influenced by factors like vaccination rates and prior immunity.
