Perlmuttschicht
Perlmuttschicht, also known as nacre or mother-of-pearl, is an iridescent organic calcium carbonate material produced by certain mollusks. It forms the smooth, tough inner lining of their shells, acting as a protective layer against irritants and parasites. The characteristic shimmering, rainbow-like effect arises from the way light interacts with the microscopic layers of aragonite crystals and organic proteins that compose the nacre. These layers are incredibly thin and arranged in a brick-like structure, causing light to diffract and reflect, creating the visual phenomenon.
Perlmuttschicht has been valued by humans for millennia, used in jewelry, decorative objects, and inlay work.
