Perkutaariset is a term that refers to procedures performed through the skin. It is derived from the Latin word "per" meaning "through" and "cutaneus" meaning "of the skin." These medical interventions generally do not require large surgical incisions, instead utilizing needles, catheters, or other specialized instruments to access internal structures.

The field of percutaneous procedures has expanded significantly with advancements in medical imaging technology, such as ultrasound, fluoroscopy, and computed tomography (CT). These imaging modalities allow physicians to visualize the targeted area in real-time, guiding instruments with precision and minimizing damage to surrounding tissues.

Common examples of percutaneous procedures include percutaneous biopsies, where a small sample of tissue is taken for diagnostic purposes. Percutaneous angioplasty and stenting are used to open blocked blood vessels. Percutaneous nephrostomy involves placing a tube through the skin into the kidney to drain urine. Many interventional radiology and cardiology procedures also fall under the umbrella of percutaneous interventions.

The advantages of percutaneous approaches often include reduced pain, shorter recovery times, and a lower risk of complications compared to traditional open surgery. However, these procedures are not suitable for all conditions and require specialized training and equipment.
