This method involves asking individuals, typically children but also adults, to draw a picture of their family, often including themselves within the drawing. The interpretation of these drawings is not based on artistic merit but rather on the psychological meaning conveyed through various elements.

Key aspects analyzed in a perhepiirros include the size and placement of figures, the inclusion or exclusion of certain family members, the details drawn for each person (such as facial features, clothing, or the presence of hands), and the overall atmosphere or style of the drawing. For instance, a child might draw themselves very small compared to other family members, which could be interpreted as feelings of insignificance. Conversely, a child who excludes a parent might be experiencing difficulties in that relationship.
