They perform on a broad range of tools that produce sound through membranes, membranes struck by mallets, or by the instrument’s own body. The percussion family includes drums (snare, bass, toms), pitched mallet instruments (marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, glockenspiel), timpani, hand percussion (congas, bongos, djembé), cymbals, tambourines, and other auxiliary instruments.
