These traces represent preferential pathways through the soil where water, and consequently dissolved substances, can move more rapidly than in the surrounding soil matrix. This preferential flow can occur due to various factors.

Physical discontinuities within the soil are a major contributor to perceleringstracés. These can include macropores, cracks, root channels, or areas with lower bulk density. In soils with distinct horizons or layers, differences in texture and structure can also create pathways of increased permeability.
