Core ideas behind PatchMatchstyle combine the fast approximate nearest neighbor search of PatchMatch with a style-aware similarity term. The method searches for patches in a source image that best match patches in a target region, but with a combined similarity metric that accounts for both photometric similarity and stylistic compatibility. Style representations may include texture statistics, local gradient structure, or features derived from a neural network, such as feature maps or Gram matrices.

Algorithmic approach follows the PatchMatch workflow of random initialization, iterative propagation, and random search to refine patch correspondences. A final blending stage stitches patches together, often using seam finding or optimization to minimize visible seams while enforcing the style constraints. The result is an image that merges content from the target region with the stylistic character drawn from the reference.

Applications encompass texture transfer, stylized inpainting, and exemplar-based texture synthesis where outputs adopt the style of a reference image. It can support local style editing, patch-based nonuniform texture application, and content-aware stylization, providing a balance between fidelity to the original content and adherence to style.
