Parvekkeita

Parvekkeita is the plural form of parveke in Finnish, referring to balconies. In Finnish architecture, parveke denotes an outdoor platform that projects from a building facade and is enclosed by a railing or balustrade. Parvekkeita provide outdoor living space for apartment dwellers, allowing access from one or more interior rooms and often serving as a place for relaxation, plants, or drying laundry in summer.

Historically, balconies have appeared in Finnish residential architecture since the early 20th century and vary from small, wood-framed extensions on wooden houses to larger concrete cantilevered structures on multi-story blocks. Modern parvekkeita may be cantilevered or supported by visible brackets, and often combine with glazing or light fencing to suit climate.

Construction typically involves a reinforced slab or frame, with a railing system made of metal, wood, or glass. The choice of materials is influenced by local climate, maintenance needs, and aesthetic goals. Safety regulations require secure railings and adequate structural transfer of loads to the building, and balconies must comply with building codes for wind, snow, and moisture resistance.

In use, parvekkeita are seasonal spaces in many parts of Finland, especially during the warmer months, but winterized designs with protective glazing or screens are also found.
