Paritätische

Paritätische, short for Paritätischer Gesamtverband, is one of Germany’s major welfare umbrella organizations. It brings together hundreds of independent nonprofit social welfare associations and initiatives that provide a wide range of services across the country. Member organizations include local welfare groups, education and health providers, and civil-society initiatives focused on social inclusion, poverty reduction, and equal opportunity. The Paritätische emphasizes civil-society participation, social justice, and political independence, and it actively seeks to influence policy and funding frameworks for affordable, high-quality welfare services.

The federation operates as a federated structure with a General Assembly, a board and presidency, as well as regional and local bodies that coordinate policy work, quality standards, and capacity-building for members. It engages in advocacy at federal and state levels, issues policy papers and guidelines, and offers organizational support, training, and project funding advice to its members. It also runs educational and professional-development programs through its Paritätische Bildungswerk.

History: The organization traces its roots to the early 20th century as a coalition of welfare groups seeking parity in representation. It continued to function during the interwar period, underwent reorganization after World War II, and was re-established in its current form as a national umbrella association in the postwar era. Today it is among Germany’s largest non-profit umbrella bodies.
