Parfumfragrance is a term that can be used to refer to the scent component of perfumes, commonly known as fragrance or parfum. In perfumery, fragrance describes the blend of aromatic compounds that gives a perfume its character. The term encompasses both the concentrated forms known as parfum (or extrait de parfum) and the broader category of scented products.

Parfum/extrait de parfum: Parfum is the most concentrated form, typically containing about 20-40% aromatic compounds in an alcohol or oil base, with the longest lasting effect, often 6-24 hours on skin.

Fragrance families and notes: Fragrance compositions are built from notes arranged in a pyramid: top notes provide initial impression, middle notes form the heart, and base notes provide longevity. Common fragrance families include floral, oriental, woody, citrus, fresh, green, chypre, and fougere. Subfamilies may mix ingredients like jasmine, sandalwood, vanilla, musk, citrus oils, and green leaves.

Ingredients and process: The fragrance is created by selecting essential oils, absolutes, aroma chemicals, and fixatives, then blending them in a solvent such as ethanol. Natural extracts and synthetic molecules are used; modern perfumery combines both. Scent development involves testing for projection, longevity, and skin chemistry.

Regulation and usage: Fragrances are regulated for safety by bodies like IFRA; products should disclose ingredients and possible allergens. Storage away from heat and sunlight preserves the perfume’s integrity.
