Paraskafën

Paraskafën is a traditional Balkan musical instrument classified as a wind instrument, primarily used in Albanian folk music. Its name derives from the Albanian words "para" meaning "before" and "skafë" meaning "boat," reflecting its historical usage and cultural significance in the region.

The paraskafën is typically made from a wooden tube with a varying length, often between 20 to 40 centimeters, and features multiple finger holes that enable the performer to produce different notes. It is played by blowing air into one end while covering and uncovering the holes with fingers, similar to other end-blown flutes. Its sound is characterized by a bright, piercing tone, capable of carrying melodies over long distances, making it suitable for outdoor performances and traditional festivities.

Throughout its history, the paraskafën has been an integral part of Albanian folk ensembles, often accompanying dance and celebratory events. The instrument is associated with pastoral and rural life, and its use persists in modern times during cultural festivals and traditional music settings.
