This can occur for a variety of reasons, leading to distinct types of coins circulating simultaneously.

One common reason for parallelausprägungen is the introduction of new designs or denominations alongside older ones. This transition period allows for the gradual phasing out of older coinage while new issues become more prevalent. For instance, a country might introduce a new series of commemorative coins that are legal tender alongside the standard circulating coinage.

Another cause can be the use of different mints or workshops producing coins for the same issuing body. Each mint might have slight variations in its striking process or die engraving, resulting in subtle differences between the coins. These variations, while intended to be minor, can become significant for collectors and numismatists seeking to identify specific mint marks or die characteristics.
