Parafrasi

Parafrasi is the restatement of a text or passage in different words, preserving the core meaning and information while altering wording and syntax. The term derives from Greek para, meaning beside, and phrasis, speech or expression, and it is used across languages to describe a reformulation that remains faithful to the original content. In Italian, parafrasi is commonly employed in literature, philosophy, law, and biblical exegesis, as well as in educational contexts to aid understanding.

Parafrasi serves multiple purposes. It can clarify difficult passages, reveal underlying ideas, or make a text more accessible to a new audience. In teaching, students practice paraphrase to demonstrate comprehension and to avoid plagiarism by expressing ideas in their own words while citing the source. Paraphrase can also be employed in analysis and criticism to reframe an argument or to highlight different facets of the text.

There are different degrees of paraphrase. A literal (parafrasi letterale) restates statements closely with limited changes in wording, whereas a liberal or free paraphrase (parafrasi libera) allows more interpretive or stylistic variation, possibly expanding on implications. Important distinctions exist between paraphrase, translation, and summary: translation renders content into another language; a summary condenses essential points; paraphrase rewords the text in the same language while preserving its meaning and structure.

In modern contexts, paraphrase also appears in computational linguistics as paraphrase generation, where models produce alternative formulations of a sentence for data augmentation and natural language understanding.
