Paneveggio

Paneveggio is a locality in Trentino, northern Italy, situated in the Dolomites and encompassed by the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park. The area is known for the Paneveggio forest, a large conifer woodland that lies at the heart of the park and is a popular destination for hiking and nature study.

The Paneveggio forest is associated with the nickname Forest of the Violin, reflecting its historical link to wood used in stringed instruments. The dominant tree species is Norway spruce (Picea abies). The forest, together with surrounding Dolomite habitats, is managed to protect biodiversity while allowing sustainable timber use and scientific study. Protected stands preserve habitats for a range of wildlife, including birds and small mammals, and offer insight into alpine forest ecosystems.

Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park protects a cross-section of the Dolomites, from forested valleys to rocky ridges, and includes marked trails, visitor facilities, and seasonal meadows. The landscape combines steep limestone and dolomitic cliffs with forests, lakes, and alpine pastures, and it forms part of the wider Dolomites region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area also supports winter tourism through nearby resorts in the valley.
