This grouping is based on shared anatomical characteristics, primarily concerning the structure and arrangement of their appendages, particularly the palps, which are sensory appendages often found near the mouthparts.

Fossil evidence suggests that palpeerids lived during the Cambrian period, a time of significant diversification in early animal life.
