Palinurus
Palinurus is a genus of spiny lobsters, also known as rock lobsters. These marine crustaceans are characterized by their long, segmented bodies and prominent, spiny antennae. Unlike true lobsters, spiny lobsters lack large claws on their first pair of legs. Instead, they possess five pairs of walking legs, the first three of which are often tipped with smaller spines. Palinurus species are typically found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, inhabiting rocky reefs, coral reefs, and seagrass beds. They are primarily nocturnal, emerging from their shelters at night to forage for food, which includes mollusks, crustaceans, and other invertebrates.
The genus Palinurus is named after Palinurus, a mythological figure in Virgil's Aeneid. In the epic poem,
Spiny lobsters are commercially important in many parts of the world, valued for their sweet, firm flesh.
