PaleoSiberian

PaleoSiberian is a term encountered in scholarly discussions about the prehistoric peoples and languages of Siberia. It is not a single field, but a label used across disciplines such as archaeology, genetics, and linguistics to describe facets of Siberia’s early history and linguistic landscape.

In historical linguistics, Paleosiberian languages refer to a geographic grouping of languages spoken across Siberia that do not form a single genealogical family. The term functions as a geographic heuristic rather than an assertion of close genetic relatedness. Examples commonly associated with Paleosiberian status include Ket (a Yeniseian language), Nivkh, Chukotko-Kamchatkan, Yukaghir, and some Samoyedic varieties. Modern comparative methods have argued against treating these languages as a coherent genetic unit, emphasizing instead their diverse origins and histories.

In paleoanthropology, Paleosiberian has been used to describe prehistoric populations in Siberia from the Paleolithic through later periods. Notable remains and sites, such as the Mal’ta-Belaya site near Lake Baikal (about 24,000 years old), have yielded evidence of Ancient North Eurasian ancestry, a lineage that contributed to later populations in Europe and the Americas. Other Siberian hunter-gatherer societies from the region illustrate the region’s long and complex genetic and cultural exchanges during the Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic.

The term originated in earlier centuries to describe Siberian peoples and languages in broad geographic terms. Today, its use is more limited and often cautioned against in favor of more precise classifications by language family or archaeological culture.
