Palavikuvastane

Palavikuvastane, also known as antipyretic, is a substance or treatment that reduces fever. Fever is a common symptom of illness, characterized by an elevated body temperature above the normal range. While fever can be a protective response of the body to infection, high or prolonged fevers can be uncomfortable and, in some cases, dangerous.

Antipyretics work by targeting the body's thermoregulatory center in the hypothalamus, a region of the brain that controls body temperature. During an infection or inflammatory process, the body releases chemicals called pyrogens, which signal the hypothalamus to raise the set point for body temperature, leading to fever. Many antipyretics act by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, a type of signaling molecule that plays a role in the fever response. By reducing prostaglandin levels, antipyretics help to reset the hypothalamic thermostat back to its normal level, thus lowering body temperature.

Common examples of antipyretics include acetaminophen (paracetamol) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and aspirin. These medications are widely available over-the-counter and are used to alleviate fever associated with various conditions, including the common cold, flu, and other infections. While effective in reducing fever, it is important to note that antipyretics do not treat the underlying cause of the fever. Medical advice should be sought if fever is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms.
