The Paketnummer is typically printed on the shipping label and is linked to a barcode. As the parcel moves through sorting centers, hubs, and delivery points, each scan updates a status in the carrier’s tracking system. Common status updates include accepted, in transit, out for delivery, delayed, and delivered. The recipient and sender can use the number to check real-time status on the carrier’s website or through the seller’s tracking page. In international shipments, the Paketnummer may be used alongside other identifiers such as a waybill or customs reference.

Formats vary by carrier and country. Some numbers are entirely numeric, others alphanumeric, and lengths differ. In German-language contexts, terms such as Sendungsnummer or Tracking number are common, with Paketnummer often used interchangeably in everyday language. The Paketnummer specifically refers to the parcel itself rather than the order or invoice number, which may be issued separately.
