Paineärsykkeillä refers to stimuli that activate pressure receptors in the skin and other tissues. These receptors, known as mechanoreceptors, are sensitive to mechanical deformation such as touch, pressure, vibration, and stretch. When a pressure stimulus is applied, it deforms the cell membrane of the mechanoreceptor, leading to the opening of ion channels. This influx of ions generates an electrical signal, a nerve impulse, which is then transmitted along sensory neurons to the central nervous system, primarily the somatosensory cortex in the brain.

Different types of mechanoreceptors respond to various aspects of pressure. For instance, Merkel cells and Ruffini endings are sensitive to sustained pressure and skin stretch, providing information about shapes and textures. Meissner corpuscles and Pacinian corpuscles are more responsive to changes in pressure, such as light touch and vibration, with Pacinian corpuscles detecting high-frequency vibrations.

The perception of pressure is crucial for numerous bodily functions. It plays a vital role in tactile sensation, allowing us to interact with our environment, identify objects, and distinguish textures. Pressure perception is also essential for proprioception, the sense of the relative position of one's own parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement. Furthermore, pressure receptors in internal organs, such as the bladder and intestines, monitor fullness and distension, contributing to visceral sensation and the regulation of bodily functions. Disruptions to pressure sensation can impact motor control, sensory feedback, and overall awareness of the body and its surroundings.
